Another Basketball Story -- With an Academic Twist

Submitted by Ms. Emenecker, Team Leader for Grade 8)

The Jr. High thought this was blog worthy!

The 76ers were running a program (outlined below) called 76ers Shoot for Success 3.0 Program. With Mrs. Dunham’s permission, our academic coach for AVID, Donna Cohen, registered our school and then it was up to the students to do their best.

At the end of the third quarter Mr. Sheppard (Team Leader Grade 7), Ms. Jones (Team Leader Grade 6) and Ms. Emenecker counted the number of students who earned a 3.0 GPA or higher and reported that number to the 76ers. The 76ers then sent the school a certificate and a voucher for each of those students. The voucher was for one free ticket plus additional tickets for family and friends (no limit) at $10 a piece (a $30 face value).

The team leaders are thrilled to report the following:

8th grade – 66 students earned a free ticket (3.0 GPA or higher),
7th grade – 87 students earned a free ticket (3.0 GPA or higher), and
6th grade – 75 students earned a free ticket (3.0 GPA or higher).

A motivational bulletin board was on display in one of the Junior High hallways. After the grades came in the 7th and 8th grade teachers cut out little basketballs and wrote the name of each student who earned a 3.0 or higher GPA on one. These were added to the board.

This picture is of one 8th grade homeroom after they received their certificates.

I must say I was very proud when my son (Alex-7th grade) came down with his certificate. Since the tickets were so inexpensive we purchased 3 extra tickets and we are going to our first 76ers game.
Woodbury students and teachers keep up the great work you are all doing.

Good job kids. Maybe someone from the school could put this in the Gloucester County Times. Why don't we ever see the Honor Roll/Principals List in there? It would be nice to see this in there.
